Popular Carriers

Nationwide has offices throughout the US. The company is a leading US property & casualty insurer that, though still a mutual firm, operates in part through publicly held insurance subsidiary Nationwide Financial. In addition to personal and commercial property & casualty coverage, life insurance, and financial services, Nationwide offers surplus lines, professional liability, workers' compensation, managed health care, and other coverage. The company sells its products through such affiliates as Farmland Insurance, Gates McDonald, Scottsdale Insurance, and asset manager Gartmore.

Nationwide was founded by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, a consumer group organized in 1926 by Ohio farmers. The early Farm Bureau leaders decided to start an auto insurance company because they believed that they were being overcharged by established insurers. Although they knew little about insurance techniques and practices, common sense told them it was only fair that rural drivers pay less for their auto insurance because they had fewer traffic accidents than city motorists.

In 1998, Allied Insurance assumed responsibility for Nationwide's independent agency.
